PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now on PC in Early Access and will launch on Xbox One in 2017.
That isn't to say Brendan doesn't have plans for a sequel beyond 5 years (or if he'll simply change his mind on the matter), but for now it seems like fans can expect plenty of content on the horizon for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. When one considers that that the title hasn't even left early access yet, it's easy to see how Greene could stand firm regarding his faith in the title's longevity - though only time will tell if Battlegrounds can keep the good times rolling without a sequel.

The game had humble beginnings as a series of fan-made modifications produced by Greene himself, and has now expanded into a studio effort that has since secured itself both a place in the best-selling PC games of all time, and an Xbox One exclusivity agreement that will soon bring the popular battle royale title to consoles. With almost 2 million concurrent users, the battlegrounds of Battlegrounds seem to be the place to be. It's clear that Greene's creation will certainly have the player base to sustain such an idea, with PUBG recently hitting the 15 million sales milestone. The gaming industry is in the middle of a transitional phase whereupon many developers and publishers are eager to test things out with games as a service, which depend on gamers buying into downloadable content and microtransactions to sustain the title years after its release. Players must loot, scavenge, and kill for gear and weapons as the playable map continually shrinks until only one player remains. We'll still have the box copy that you buy - that's what you get for PUBG. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG for short) features on game-mode that has 100 players parachute onto a remote, desolate island with nothing but their own wits and skills. Here's the juicy bits from Greene's interview this week:
Despite this, Brendan Greene says he visualizes Battlegrounds getting more refined as the years wind on, with more maps and assets being made available to keep the fans come back. In the modern era, it's hard to imagine a popular game not setting itself up for a followup sequel to cash in while it has the spotlight (it's also easy to forget that Destiny originally had a ten year plan, too). In his vision, Greene says that there isn't a sequel. During a recent interview with IGN, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds creator Brendan Greene fielded some questions regarding the future of the game, and where he saw the intellectual property 5 years from now. Xbox fans are still waiting for their chance to play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds when the game releases on console later this year, but many are already looking further into the future.
